Ahh spring! The best time of the year to give your body a fresh start and reset. The days are getting longer, the weather warmer, and the motivation to get going is here in full force. What’s the best way to prep for a successful spring and beyond? How about a little detox? We’ve got news for you - detoxing isn’t some trendy drink or cleanse, it’s a collection of choices you select and stick with.
With that being said - here are 4 important ways to get detoxing this spring!
1. Dedicating time to do things you like - If you don’t think detoxing out your schedule is important, think again! You NEED to give yourself a much-needed break regularly. This prevents stress build up, burn out, adrenal dysfunction, and more.
Setting aside 1 to 2 hours a day for activities that you enjoy is a great way to start. This could be anything from reading a book to going for a walk in nature or engaging in a hobby. Taking time out for yourself is important as it can help reduce stress, sharpen your focus and productivity, as well as enhance your relationships. In addition, it gives you a chance to reflect and appreciate the positive aspects of life, while also helping you identify any areas that need improvement.
All you have to do is pick an hour or two from your daily schedule and use it to do only things that you enjoy. Don’t make excuses - set an alarm, block off your calendar, do whatever possible to make sure that time is yours!
2. Detox out sugars - Detoxing out refined sugars can be an amazing way to boost your overall health and well-being, but it may be tricky to do without feeling a little grumpy. A great place to start is to swap out sugary snacks with natural sugars, like those found in fruit. Give it a few days - fruits will start to taste way more sweet to you!
If you’re starting to feel hangry throughout the day, make sure your protein consumption is up. That way your body won’t be as dependent on carbohydrates as a source of fuel. Check out some of these snacks you can whip up to beat the 3 PM slump:
Additionally, be sure to sip lots of water - it can help to flush out toxins and curb cravings.
3. Get enough sleep - Did you know our brains actually detox and wash themselves out while we rest? It’s how we process memories, store information, and prepare for the next day. Therefore, getting enough ZZZ's is essential for feeling your best!
If you haven’t yet, it’s time to create a sleep routine. Make sure you set a pre bed alarm: figure out what time you need to be up in the morning, subtract 6-8 hours, and then subtract another hour to signal that it’s time to wind down. Winding down can look different for everyone - maybe it’s journaling about your day, maybe it’s taking a nice bath, maybe it’s doing some gentle stretching. Whatever it is, set it and stick to it!
4. Challenge yourself - We often think about detoxing as removing things, but holding yourself accountable is another great way to detox out bad habits - which are extremely hard to break, if you don’t set yourself up for success.
Some ways to set yourself up for success is to put yourself inside a competition. This is not a competition against anyone else - it is you vs. you. Create a fitness routine, select a meal plan, and most importantly - select a period of time in which you plan to stick with it. Bad habits can take anywhere from 21 days to 42 days to break, so make sure you’re building in time to succeed. Don’t quit after one week!
It’s also important to have a healthy community around you. Too often people are intimidated when someone around them makes healthy choices for themselves, and that won’t do anything to help you stick to your goals. Make sure you find like minded people who understand the struggle, and will do nothing but support you, even when times get tough.
